Reasons to Start Journaling

COVID-19 was the reason I started to daily journal and at the time when I started, I did not think it would have much of an impact. Now it is 2024 and I can proudly say that keeping a journal has changed my life for the better. Keeping a journal has improved my mental health, kept me accountable for my goals, and made me love myself more. Journaling helped me overcome some of the most difficult moments and I believe that journaling can be healing to the soul. I enjoy writing first thing in the morning, it helps me clear my head and sets a good intention for the day. I typically start and end my journaling with gratitude, this way I am programming my brain to focus on the good aspects of my life. Some people, prefer journaling at night which is just beneficial and can be a great way to relax after a long day. There are no “rules” to journaling but if you need any guidance I recommend starting by writing; the date, what you are grateful for, and the tasks you need to accomplish. These are just some simple things to write about although there is no right or wrong way to journal. When I'm going through a difficult time or feeling extra hormonal, I write down each every one of my thoughts. It is a safe space for my thoughts, and it is comforting to know that I can write anything without being judged.

Additionally, keeping a journal can improve your overall well-being and mental health. It can function as therapy, giving you a healthy way to process and let go of your feelings while also assisting you in managing stress, anxiety, and other emotions. According to research positive affect journalism has been shown to improve human mental health and have a more positive outlook on life. There are many benefits to keeping a journal and I recommended to all of my friends and family to have one. As you begin journaling, start small and make attainable goals, and you will see positive changes in your surroundings.
